Most Talented
Dear Billy,
I am writing to let you know and inform my Tucker High classmates that I am not able to attend the social events that you and Rachel have worked so hard to plan. The past year I had several surgeries including aortic heart valve replacement, and pericardia effusion, both of which required six day hospital stays. Also I am type II diabetic with four blood sugar tests daily, and 5 insulin shots plus a few prescription medications. I wanted very much to attend, but wisdom dictates otherwise.
If you are so inclined, please let my friends hear the following:
My life since 1962 graduation has been most unusual. Since I was selected “most talented” I continued as a member of the Atlanta Symphony. Henry Sopkin helped me receive a scholarship to Oglethorpe University, where I received instruction from several great teachers, especially speech and writing, history, and music in Western civilization. In 1963 I won a full scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia for study with Mason Jones. I graduated in 1966, toured Jamaica, Trinidad, and South America with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia orchestra for five weeks. Then I joined the U.S. Army, thinking I would be drafted, and spent 3 years (1966-1969) at Fort Myer in the U.S. Army Band in the Military District of Washington D.C. In the spring of 1969 I won an appointment as “co-principal horn” of the National Symphony Orchestra and in 1971 resident of J.F.K. Center Concert Hall. I retired in 1999.
I’ve had two marriages with three children and now eight grandchildren. My wife is general manager of Indianapolis Airport Hampton Inn and Suites. I’m ordained with Bible Time Ministries founded by Roy Parker from Tucker, GA.
May God bless you all!
Dan Carter
