John W. Moore III: livin' better
than he deserves.
My family moved to Tucker from Rock Hill, SC in 1960, in time for junior
year at
Tucker High. As one of the few then in the class with a drivers license
(age 15 in SC), in
Short time I knew most of the class, at least 'til the rest of you got your
own.
I absolutely loved Atlanta (my brother Jimmy still lives in Lilburn). My
Tucker High
years were some of the best ever, and I have fond memories of you all. Thanks
to Mr.
Trimble's English grades, I managed to graduate with the class.
I went to The Citadel, and actually enjoyed it: spent time in Charleston,
at the beach,
played sports, was a poor student, walked tours, and graduated, again with
my class, as an
officer in Uncle Sam's Army - just in time for the Vietnam War!
Army life during wartime isn't that bad, if you stay in the States. I mostly
didn't. 1969
was spent in Vietnam with 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry. Promotion was fast,
and at age 24 I
was a captain, commanding a company in combat along the DMZ. Got a purple
heart,
nothing serious; and came home convinced that war is a damn waste.
I left the Army after 9 years in 1975: got married; we had a daughter, Brook,
and worked
the next 13 years for a national insurance company in Chicago, Washington,
Fort Wayne,
and finally Charlotte. My wife and I divorced after 11 years, a hard thing,
so I moved to
Rock Hill with Brook; joined Peoples First Insurance as a commercial agent
in 1989 and
worked there since. Both my parents are deceased; wonderful Southern people,
God
Bless Them.
A few years after moving "home," I met Nancy, and we just celebrated
25 years of
marriage. She brought me a wonderful wedding present, her daughter Marianne,
and I've
lived with "My Girls" ever since, the happiest years of my life.
The Girls are grown and have their own lives, Brook in Knoxville, TN, Marianne
in San
Francisco, but we see each other whenever we can. Nancy retired after 30+
years in
education, me after the above, but we still work part time. God has been
gracious to us:
we are blessed, healthy and happy.
Blessings and kind wishes to you all; hope to see you in May!
