I was never part of the “in group” at Tucker high school. My best friend
was though (“my best friend” probably only in my mind) but at any rate because
of that I was included some what. One story I do remember of high school
is that one time there was a spend-the- night- party at Barrie Bixler’s
house and someone put a bug in my ear, literally. That’s when I decided
it might be better for me to just not try to be in with the “in crowd” any
more. I have three sisters and one brother, all of which had better experiences
in high school than I.
I went to Massey Business School after high school and than got a wonderful
job at the Presbyterian Center in Atlanta. I spend most of my summers in
Montreat, a Presbyterian retreat in the mountains of North Carolina, facilitating
conferences for people in the church. My sister Carolyn and I got an apartment
in Atlanta (man we thought we were something). There were a lot of Cuban
people living in the area at that time and one Cuban family kind of took
us in as part of their family, and that is where I met my husband although
he was Colombian not Cuban. He graduated from Georgia State University.
We moved to Greensboro NC where he get a job working for the company that
made wrangler blue jeans, with them we moved to Puerto Rico, Bernardo was
controller for the European division of Blue Bell there. We lived an affluent
and very privileged life in Puerto Rico. After twenty years of marriage
my husband “fell in love” with his 22 year old secretary needless to say
we divorced. In the end however I did get the best part of him, my wonderful
son and grandchildren.
I will be retiring this year in October and an planning to move to Boone,
North Carolina to be closer to my son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren,
Isabella Elena, Bella (5) and Cristavo Santiago, Tavo (1 ½).
This reunion and cruise sounds like a wonderful plan and will be coming
at just the right time in my life. Hope it all pans out.
Note from Bill Hardin: Mary and her sister invited
my sister, Diane, to a party at their apartment. At that party, Diane met
Al Cerqueda, her eventual husband. Al is one of the greatest possible husbands,
fathers and brother-in-laws. Thank you Mary.
